Rotary Club Projects

Charity Support

• Co-Sponsor the South Bay Classic Golf Tournament held yearly at the Los Verdes Golf Course. The thrust of the South Bay Classic is to raise funds for at-risk youth in each of the South Bay School Districts. Well over $100,000 has been contributed yearly, over the last 21 years, to prevent Drug and Alcohol abuse in our youth.
• Adopted one of the Associations for Retarded Citizens (ARC) group homes where we have built fences, painted and remodeled kitchens. The club is also actively involved in helping the ARC in many other ways through fund raising and local events.
• Work with the Scott Newman Center to fight drug abuse, battered women and child abuse, through mutual projects and fund raising.
• Work with the Pediatric Therapy Network raising funds to benefit our youth with physical disabilities.
• Actively support the Boys and Girls Club of the Harbor Gateway by adopting low income families during the holiday season.
• Ring the Salvation Army bell during the Holidays to raise funds for the less fortunate.

International Projects

• Involved in Joint International Projects with the Guaymas Rotary Club in Guaymas, Mexico, to upgrade and improve facilities, classrooms and programs in Secondario #59 Middle School. This Middle School is located in one of the poorest areas of Guaymas, Mexico. In 2006/2007 we upgraded a Woodshop/classroom. We provided the financial support to remodel, paint, and upgrade the electrical system, plus we supplied 7 pallets of donated power equipment and tools from Rotary Club throughout Southern California to equip the woodshop/classroom. In 2007/2008, we purchased an Air Conditioning System for the library in Secondario #59 and provided a new water pump so the children have water throughout the school day. In 2009/2010, South Bay Sunrise Rotary provided all of the equipment and tools to create an Electrical Workshop to teach the students of Secondario #59 how to become Apprentice Electricians.
• Co-sponsored an International Project providing medical equipment and supplies and a water well project to the city of San Quintin, Mexico.
• Involved in a Joint International Project with the Rotary Club of San Jose, Costa Rica. This project is supplying tools and equipment for Casa Mana, a Drug Rehabilitation Center Woodshop in San Jose, Costa Rica. This woodshop is part of the rehabilitation process, teaching clients skills in the woodworking trade so they can be gainfully employed after they complete the rehabilitation program.
• Recently been part of a Joint Project with the Torrance-4 to provide and Ambulance to a city in Columbia, South America.
• Involved in an International Project with Tecate, Mexico. This Project is called the “Christmas Train to Tecate”, in which we deliver donated Christmas gifts to the children of Tecate, Mexico.

Local Projects

• Recently been a part of a Joint Project with the Torrance-4 to provide new Basketball backboards to the YMCA in Torrance.
• Sponsored a “Youth Act Club” in the Torrance, Madrona Middle School, 6th, 7th and 8th grade.
• Sponsoring an “Interact Club” in Torrance High School, grades 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th.

South Bay Sunrise Rotary Club is also involved in itself. We like each other. We have lots of club fellowship and co-club fellowship events. Our meetings, although early, are very fast pace with all members taking an active role. South Bay Sunrise Rotary Club is a club that “get’s it done.”
